Feel Proud to Show Off on Social Media
Have you ever seen people showing off on social media? does it bother you?. As a Gen Z who doesn't come from a rich family and every day has to see all the arrogance of people on social media, sometimes it's confusing. There are a lot of content creators from youtube and instagram who do this. Not only abroad, we also can find flexing content in our country. But the fun thing is, many netizens or people actually like content like this. Actually, the essence of content on social media is "selling dreams", for example some of their creators understand what the audience wants, such as content for happy families, showing off luxury goods, and much more. Maybe we will think why someone likes to show off?, and the reasons for that are also many, and we can't see it from just one factor. First they want to get respect from other's there's need to show off, and one way to get respect is by showing our status. Then the second factor why people show off is, to show just how hard they worked. And besides that they also want to get praise from others. The third may be due to the insecurity factor, namely they have to feel confident and be accepted by our peers. Almost every day we see photos or content of people on social media, then we sometimes reflect on their lives with ours, then feel pressured and want to be like what we see. It’s not uncommon for them to try to achieve it but it's not appropriate, because people's realities are different. And in the end we never have enough of what we have.
In addition, several phenomena such as "instagram envy" emerged, which is a situation where someone has envy of other people's lives on Instagram. Envy is not only limited to material things, but achievements can also be material for mutual envy. Just like sometimes I find someone with higher stated, their clothes, bags, and goods are all branded, but it turns out that behind it all they are actually broke and have a lot of debt. Sometimes when we see something on social media, we always think that it is reality, but actually its not. For example, often photos uploaded by influencers are sometimes made as if their lives are beautiful and comfortable. Not infrequently, they also intentionally form fake personalities, such as buying followers, fake endorsements, or taking photos with new clothes but when they are finished, they return the clothes again, or even pretend to go on vacation to a luxurious hotel.
After
all, if we wonder why they did that, well maybe because they did it to restore
their status. Whatever it is we can't blame them completely, because in fact we
live in a world capitalization, and our self-esteem is seen from our lifestyle.
This is why at this time we find many young children who if asked what their
aspirations are in the future, they will answer that they want to become youtubers
or social media creators. The urgency will not stop unless we return to
reality, and create boundaries for what we see on social media. In the end we
can't control what people will post, and want to post something. We also can't
control what people want to buy with their own money, because stupidity is
their problem. Then actually the control is in ourselves, we decide what we
see, and what is good for us to see. Social media has also provided mute,
block, or unfollow features, and we can live in the moment and stay focused on
our own lives.
